“How cheap can you make it?” – why I’m making a TV series, but not for TV

Posted on June 11, 2013July 25, 2014 by David

For years I asked myself why Australia hasn’t had its own animated series for adults. Now I know that it’s my own fault!         “Pretty cheap!” Last year I went to a launch event put on by our state film funding body and SBS, Australia’s multicultural government TV network. At the drinks…

Be A Man: animatic action

Posted on January 13, 2013July 25, 2014 by David

These images are from the storyboards I’ve been doing for my animated series, BE A MAN. Actually, they’re an awkward cross between storyboards and animatic frames. Storyboards should be clear and easy to read when printed on paper. These would be quite difficult to read because of the way I do my boards — I…

The Precinct: here’s what an animated cop show pitch looks like.

Posted on November 2, 2012November 2, 2013 by David

In 2011, the Precinct team put this proposal to SBS — a proposal for a half hour animated cop show for adults. We were told it would be good to have an idea of how three seasons’ worth of the show would work, hence the enormous cast and loads of plotting and ideas. We left…

Precinct series is go.

Posted on October 15, 2012July 25, 2014 by David

Hey people. I’ve been blogging about my “upcoming” animated series, The Precinct, for almost six years now! In that time, I’ve learned a lot about the animation industry, and about animation itself. I’m a much better artist and animator than I was in 2006 (see here for evidence). A better writer, too, hopefully. I’ve…

Alan, Kyle and Jackie

Posted on October 1, 2012August 16, 2013 by David

I think media fatheads talking ugly garbage help make the world a worse place, and that’s why I’m going to put these ones in some new cartoons when I get started on a Precinct series later this year.

It’s a popularity contest

Posted on November 24, 2011November 24, 2011 by David

Seeking a valid quantifier by which to judge your personal and artistic progress and likelihood of finding a method by which to support yourself in the arts? Stupid internet contests may not be it! I’m conditioned for minimisation and self-deprecation. I don’t like talking big about my work. I’m very uncomfortable with the idea of…

David Blumenstein

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).

I regularly collaborate with my wife, Sarah Howell.
