Countdown: ten days to MIPCOM

Posted on October 1, 2008 by David

I’m starting to get hyped/nervous about this trip.

We’ve got meetings with some foreign broadcasters and fun-looking animation studios, which is great. I was kind of freaking out that nobody would want to talk to us over there and I’d quit my job for nothing. Now I can swing back to my regular overconfidence.

I had Woody ask for meetings with all the parent companies of the American cable networks who do great dramas, like HBO (Sopranos, Deadwood, many more), FX (The Shield), AMC (Breaking Bad), USA, etc. They don’t do cartoon funny normally, but I’m hoping they’ll agree to meet, talk to us and realize they should be doing boundary-pushing animation as well as live-action. Who doesn’t want to see an HBO cartoon?

Actually, they have had one based on the Todd McFarlane comic “Spawn”, plus they’ve just debuted a brand new animated series, a stiff, cheap, verbal one in the Adult Swim style (says the guy responsible for some of the least animated “funny cartoons ever).

Looks like I’ll be doing a lot of walking around attempting to be friendly (unnatural. I’m a cartoonist, you know), leaving business cards and flyers with representatives in hopes we can get a little time with the people we’ve missed. But I suspect a lot of the companies I’m interested in have sent marketing people to shill their new shows rather than people who’d actually want to talk development. Never know, though.

Which reminds me: the flyers need to be printed…

Most of the pilot animation is done and sexy. I spent today animating scenes and watching Columbo. With all the boards I’ve been doing, I’d forgotten that I enjoy animating! A finished cut minus music should be ready by the back half of the weekend!

It is good to be doing some other stuffs for a while then go back to what you were doing and realize you love it.

BTW, the guy eating ice cream in front of the billboard –> is that the butcher next door?

Funny smokes you’ve got at the end, I reckon one of the explosives can land closer to the camera, on the conveyor belt maybe, will be fantastic

    Great Action!

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).
