I hate airing my private thoughts publicly. I prefer to leave that to “the art”, and, importantly, I assume that nobody should need to know or care what I have to say about most things. And this holds, except that I have relevant personal experience about a current issue, and it may as well be…

Octane Render: artists talk about A.I. art

Posted on April 18, 2023April 18, 2023 by David

I have a big long comic up at a site called Friends With Benefits — it’s called Octane Render and it’s about A.I. generative art, viewed through the lens of the indie-comics community I’m part of. About nine months ago I wrote the following to people who get my newsletter (sign up! top right of…

Bye Jory

Posted on April 24, 2016March 31, 2019 by David

My cousin Jory Prum died today; he was in a road accident a few weeks back and never came good. Jory was an inspiring guy. He was a very kind, good person, he cared about politics local and beyond and he was an artist (music and sound design). He made a name for himself doing…

Stanleys 2013: The Australian Cartoonists Association conference (part 2)

Posted on October 30, 2013July 25, 2014 by David

Hi! This is part 2 of my report on the Stanleys conference. Part 1 of this recap is here. I had some interesting conversations with people after I spoke; I’m sure Tim did too. They were intrigued by what we’re doing at Squishface, and often this led into conversations about the ACA, and what and…

Stanleys 2013: The Australian Cartoonists Association conference (part 1)

Posted on October 29, 2013July 25, 2014 by David

I went to the Stanleys again this year. The Stanleys are the conference/awards night of the Australian Cartoonists Association. I blogged about it the first time I went, in 2011. The ACA is a funny little club, and I’ve been asked why I’m involved with it. I’ve now been a member for three years and…

Leadership Lately I’d been thinking about all the work I’ve been doing toward getting The Precinct happening. It’s kept me very busy, but probably not as busy as I would be if were making the show itself. So I probably need to get used to this level of activity! I’ve been wondering what kind of…

David Blumenstein

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).

Sarah Howell

I regularly collaborate with my wife, Sarah Howell.
