COVID-19 visual explainer, made early in the pandemic - March 2020

Up your nose: Visual communication and COVID-19

Posted on July 13, 2020June 14, 2021 by David

A design colleague working with kids in mandatory quarantine asked for suggestions as to ways to gamify the process of giving children coronavirus nasal swab tests, preferably using paper (as it’s disposable). This was my first thought. COVID-19 swabs for kids: an interaction from David Blumenstein on Vimeo. If you’d like to use it with…

BE A MAN: Precinct colour palettes

Posted on July 3, 2013July 25, 2014 by David

Not to make a big deal of it, but I’m designing the rooms in The Precinct so that they get bluer and colder the further back into the building you go. The women’s bathroom sits outside that because it was more recently renovated.

“Bar codes” animation design

Posted on May 23, 2011 by David

I haven’t blogged in ages, as I’ve been on my honeymoon and also I’m lazy. But I wanted to show you a few character/bg designs I did for a little corporate job recently. Most of the work in this (approx) 2 1/2 minute animation was in the design. There were only a few heavy animation…

New Precinct pics

Posted on February 9, 2011 by David

For the last couple of months we’ve been working on a new pitch/proposal for a Precinct half-hour series. This has meant a lot of meetings re the scripts (which need to be reworked to fit the longer format), the plots and the “big ideas” behind the show (we’re thinking about three seasons’ worth, so there’s…

John Howard’s Knees: design redux

Posted on November 8, 2010November 8, 2010 by David

Been having more thoughts about the look and style of John Howard’s Knees (a cartoon I’m making about the former PM and his smashable knees). I quite like this version of him, as far as the balance between cartoon character and actual resemblance goes, but the style feels like a rip-off of something, not sure…

David Blumenstein

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).
