On Thursday last week we had our first actual recording session.
Previously myself and longtime pal Adam Wajnberg recorded a temp dialogue track at my place and I put that over the animatic (a rough pose-to-pose version of the episode). Watching this back did not fill me with confidence, because we’d talked weird and made with the funny voices to differentiate the characters, and my feeling is that much of the humor in this show would come from the appropriate-sounding voice talent (i.e. doing all the voices ourselves like Trey Parker and Matt Stone do is not an option here).
This session was attended by myself, Adam (voicing the character of Martinez, newest officer at The Precinct), Katrina Mathers (doing Jessup, the voluptuous firebrand who can perhaps never be tamed), Kynan Barker (turning D’Arcy, the wisecracking larrikin, a bit more homo than I had previously considered — but I’m kinda liking it) his friend Anna Grace Hopkins (trying out Fargo, one of the few officers without a deadly secret) and Adrian Calear, who, I think all would agree, DESTROYS in the role of Sarge, everybody’s boss. His constant, tireless yelling is a thing of beauty, and it’s a bitter joy to have to decide between two equally ball-ripping takes. So I’ve been chopping them up and making Frankensteined edits.
So now I’m enjoying looking at a newly refurbished segment of the animatic which has had the old voices (largely) removed and the exciting new tracks dropped in. This is where it starts feeling real, baby.
