Drawing of Melbourne University grounds, with the caption "Purely Financial Grounds"

Purely financial grounds

Posted on September 9, 2025September 9, 2025 by David

Meanjin is an Australian literary journal which has been suddenly shut down by its publisher, Melbourne University Press. They say the closure, which comes following no special appeals for subscribers or attempts to “save” the publication by its publisher, is on “purely financial grounds”. A rally is happening at the MUP office, at 715 Swanston…

What We Tell Them launch

Posted on September 22, 2019September 22, 2019 by David

Had a launch for my new book, What We Tell Them, at Readings Carlton this past week! What We Tell Them: A Storybook By Mr. Tony Abbott illuminates the words and actions of Australia’s most accidental PM and some of his lovable pals! It isn’t really a children’s book, unless you like your children sad….

Six Ways To Relax And Put A Terrible 2016 In The Rear-View

Posted on December 6, 2016December 5, 2016 by David

We’ve had a rough year, no doubt. We’ve lost so many of our cultural touchstones — David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen. There’ve been earthquakes. Fires. And politics? Well, let’s not even go there. Let’s just not. We’re all in need of some time out and some self-care. Is work getting you down? Maybe you’re thinking…

That’s what dreams are made of

Posted on February 7, 2012 by David

Lisa Dempster wrote a cool article about achieving your dreams. I just want to provide a short rebuttal. 1. Know what you want I know what she means. I want lots of things. Often it’s tempting to grab low-hanging fruit because it’s close by (the very reason Sarah and I leave fruit in random places…

“Bret Braddock” drafting

Posted on June 7, 2011 by David

I spoke on a panel at the Emerging Writers Festival last week and gave a little presentation on how I draft an episode of The Bret Braddock Adventures (a weekly webcomic about a lousy workplace you should really be reading). They let me put up some images of the stages in doing one of these…

Transmedia Vic Conference Day

Posted on January 27, 2011August 4, 2015 by David

What’s transmedia storytelling? It’s what we used to call “multiplatform”, or “cross media”. Essentially, I think it just means “stories told across more than one platform”. Like a TV show that does little online videos that fill in a bit of backstory. Or those nifty games I’ve talked about before that were staged online and…

David Blumenstein

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).

Sarah Howell

I regularly collaborate with my wife, Sarah Howell.
