What is The Precinct? — part four: meet my rack

Posted on January 12, 2007January 12, 2007 by David

It’s important The Precinct have a distinctively rocking sound, and for that I’m relying largely on my recently acquired collection of budget ’80s synthesizers and keyboards, the idea being that capturing the special timbre of my beloved cheap cop movies will somehow channel their spirit into the sky above New York City and open the gates of hell, that our master ZUUL might emerge and conquer the Earth.
My implements of death include:

The Roland HS-60
This is my big gun: a late ’80s version of the Juno 106. Specialises in strings, special effects and analogue sliders which let me make crazy whooshing filter sweeps. Features joystick pitch bender, MIDI in/out, inbuilt speakers and classy chipboard base. Choice.

The Korg Poly-800
A digital/analogue hybrid with the power of BASIC SEQUENCER! Light enough to fashion into a keytar, this muther also features joystick pitch/VCF bender, MIDI in/out and simple buttonpusher programming interface. Not as versatile as HS-60 but capable of some low-down resonance that’s a real winner.

The Casio CZ-1000
A fully digital fizzer/screamer, this basic synthesizer is made for complex envelope effects, ripping leads and electric keyboard/hammered instrument imitations. Features slightly more involved buttonpusher programming, capability to trigger two patches at once for a big monophonic sound and ring modulator circuit for extra squeal.

Together, these machines create immense SquelchPower(tm) which was undoubtedly destined to score cop show chase scenes. Listen to this. Virtually all the sounds in it were made with the Korg and Casio, aside from some typically shredding guitar from Jesse Bear.

I love what you have to say about the Roland HS 60! I’ve had mine for a about 15 years as a closet synthesist. I was thinking about selling it cause, you know, times are rough. The mp3 is awesome! I could hear the HS 60 all over that track. OK, I won’t sell it. I’ll sleep in a doorway with it craddled under my arms if I have too. LOL. Love it, Love you, Love your show!

    Be blessed,

    Emery

David Blumenstein

I’m a service designer, cartoonist and co-founder of Squishface Studio. I’ve done comics for The Guardian, Crikey and Australian MAD. Currently also deputy president of the Australian Cartoonists Association.

I usually write about things that shit me off, from bad bosses (The Bret Braddock Adventures) to pick-up artists (#takedown) to white supremacist trolls (The Internet’s Most Trolled Cartoonist) to predatory cults (Why Los Angeles is Scientology’s perfect city) and nasty tech bros (Octane Render: Cartoonists talk about A.I. art).

I’m working on graphic novels called Sciensatics (about cultists) and Free Money, Please (about wealth and passive income).
